MATE is a summer intensive program for 5th through 12th grade teachers. The program is designed to connect the resources of the University with the talents and vision of school districts, with the goal of addressing the needs of students in the area of mathematics.

MATE establishes a collaboration of professionals interested in improving student achievement in mathematics. This collaboration consists of:

  • University professors
  • District mathematics teachers.
  • University undergraduate students interested in teaching.
  • University graduate students interested in research.
Participants are exposed to useful interactive classroom ideas which bring relevance and excitement to learning. Algebra, geometry and analysis form the core of the program as they are the keys to college entrance and workforce readiness as well as a foundation of understanding for many career choices. Participants are given a professional library of resource materials to be used in the implementation of new strategies for the classroom and a significant stipend.

The goal of Climbing Higher with the Academy for Mathematics Performance (CHAMP) is to create an educational environment where MATE participants, University CMST students, and classroom teachers can work collaboratively to create, demonstrate and test innovative instructional strategies in mathematics.

Students from grades 4-11 are the recipients of this collaborative effort. The targeted goal is to validate the importance of teachers utilizing new instructional strategies to increase student achievement; however, this targeted opportunity will provide programs that will benefit students by increasing their content knowledge and UC awareness.

The scope of CHAMP encompasses activities that provide teachers with opportunities to collaboratively develop curriculum and lessons that support research on how students learn best, while providing students with instruction in mathematics content areas.
