ACTS is a 5-year project funded by the National Science Foundation, based on the partnership between UC Riverside and Jurupa Unified School District. The goal is to improve student preparation for and achievement in Algebra I, by providing professional development to preservice and inservice teachers and by providing additional support and enrichment activities to students.

Jurupa Mathematics Academy of Teaching Excellence (JMATE)

Jurupa MATE is a summer intensive, yearlong program for 4th through 12th grade teachers in the Jurupa Unified School District designed to connect the resources of the university with the talents and vision of educators. The fundamental goal of JMATE is to establish a collaboration of professionals interested in improving student achievement in Algebra I. This collaboration consists of university professors, district mathematics teachers, university undergraduates interested in teaching, and university graduate students interested in research. The collaborative focuses on mathematics content, pedagogy for teaching the content and research issues related to student achievement, and teacher development. Teachers are exposed to useful, interactive classroom ideas. They are given a stipend along with a professional library of resource materials to be used in the implementation of the new ideas at the classroom. Participants are expected to share information with interested people and to attend various follow-up programs throughout the coming school year. This professional development for teachers provides opportunities to be connected to the mathematics education network in California and in the United States.

Climbing Higher with the Academcy for Mathematics Performance (CHAMP)

The goal of CHAMP is to create an educational environment where MATE participants, University Community Teaching Fellowships in Mathematics and Science (CTFMS) students, and classroom teachers can work collaboratively to create, demonstrate and test innovative instructional strategies in mathematics with students from grades four through eleven.

Accelerating Literacy Integrating Algebra and Science (ALIAS)

ALIAS is open to teachers who have participated in MATE. A team of UCR professors, middle and high school teachers create inquiry based projects and laboratory/career experiences for the sequence of science classes. Based on previous analysis of current practices, teachers are selecting supplemental materials, acquiring new content knowledge and developing curricular units that are aligned to the state standards. The overarching aim in these activities is to build student awareness and motivation for advanced courses in science.
