FOR TEACHERS
MATE (Mathematics Academy for Teaching Excellence)

MATE is a program for elementary and secondary teachers designed to provide mathematics content, pedagogy for teaching the content and research issues related to student achievement, and teacher development. Algebra, geometry and analysis form the core of the program. Teachers are exposed to useful, content rich interactive classroom ideas; they are given a stipend along with a professional library of resource materials to be used in the implementation of the new ideas in the classroom. Participants are expected to share the information learned in this academy with interested people (parents, other teachers, community leaders, administrators, and students). Visit the MATE page.

Science QUEST (Queries to Understanding Excellence in Science Teaching)


Science QUEST is a week-long, full-day program for 4th through 12th grade teachers that want to rediscover the wonders of science. The academy will foster an integrated approach to teaching science with emphasis on current science topics with a hands-on approach. Teachers will collaborate with like-minded professionals and will be provided with items to complement the day's explorations. Visit the Science QUEST page.

ALIAS (Accelerated Literacy Integrating Algebra and Science)

A team of UCR professors, middle and high school teachers create inquiry based projects and laboratory/ career experiences for the sequence of science classes. Based on previous analysis of current practices, teachers are selecting supplemental materials, acquiring new content knowledge and developing curricular units that are aligned to the state standards. The overarching aim in these activities is to build student awareness and motivation for advanced courses in science.

The goals of CMST are to to provide professional development and a mentoring setting for college mathematics/science majors who want to become teachers; to improve student achievement; and to update the mathematics/science content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of classroom teachers. Healthy Body-Healthy Mind

Brochure

Healthy Body-Healthy Mind is a weeklong summer program for middle school students, which focuses on developing a well-rounded individual by balancing the role of health education, fitness, nutrition and a positive mental attitude.  Students will receive instruction in mathematics as it relates to health, physical education as it relates to a healthy lifestyle, self-motivation and character development. The goal of this project is to stimulate an awareness and exploration of self through engaging and motivational activities, which inform and challenge the body and mind. Visit the HBHM page.

Project GEMS  is an academy of learning for middle school girls in mathematics, especially mathematics as it relates to college and to science and technology.  The purpose is to empower girls with knowledge: knowledge about the power of mathematics, knowledge about community service, knowledge about mentoring and supporting one another.   Project GEMS provides a stimulating environment so that mathematics is seen as interesting, relevant and related to other subjects and to life.  As a result of the foundation provided by this academy,  girls are motivated to take more mathematics courses and consider careers which are mathematically based.  Positive attitudes are nurtured as girls learn about community service and are exposed to successful women role models.
